Role of our laboratory

All waste oil collected is screened to ensure compliance and to identify the most appropriate processing method to either our Processed Fuel Oil (PFO) or our Recycled Fuel Oil (RFO). Processing on site is monitored by the laboratory and every batch of PFO or RFO is tested to ensure the highest quality of product.

In addition to the UKAS Accredited PFO testing activities the laboratory can test a wide range of waste oils and other materials using analytical techniques such as wave dispersive x - ray florescence spectrometry (WDXRF) for elemental analysis.

For the elements not tested for by WDXRF the laboratory is also equipped with an inductive coupled plasma spectrophotometer (ICPOES) which can also be used for the elemental analysis of waste water or other water based samples.

It is also equipped with an energy dispersive x-ray florescence (EDXRF) spectrometer to test for sulphur.

We are one of only a small number of laboratories in the country capable of testing oils for PCB contamination; testing samples on behalf of our customers to ensure that any re-used transformer oils do not contain PCBs.

We have developed documented in-house methods for the rapid determination of sediment in waste oil, water in waste oil and gas oil (Karl Fischer method), total PCB in waste oil (GC/ECD), flash point of waste oil and gas oil, density of waste oil, gas oil and PFO, calorific value of waste oil, gas oil and PFO, ash in waste oil and viscosity at other temperatures.

In addition to the above our chemists are occasionally asked to test for other parameters, or other materials apart from oils which involve non – routine tests. These tests are normally carried out under the direct supervision of the Technical Manager (Laboratory) who has experience in method development and validation.
